Color Doesn't Mean A Thing

These days we say we don’t discriminate
But then we’re put in a situation and better thinking comes too late
Talking behind our backs, making up rumors
I’m not laughing at all, this is not funny humor
Especially if gets in between you and I
Your momma’s saying, “You shouldn’t be with that guy.
He’s a different color, his religion is of another,
You’re not meant for each other.”
But you and I are long time lovers
And what hurts me most is when I hear her say she’ll take you and move
‘Cause she’s insisting I’m dangerous
Sad thing is there’s nothing she can prove
Nor will there ever be ‘cause I’d never harm you
Doesn’t she know, how couldn’t she, that I’d never hurt you?
We both know, you and I, I’ll only ever love you

And yet they go on and on
Claiming interracial couples are wrong
But you love me, babe, and I love you, babe
Ethnicity will not get in our way

I don’t care what they say, you don’t care what they say
Just take my hand, my love, and I won’t let them take you away
I don’t care what they say, you don’t care what they say
Color doesn’t mean a thing when your hearts are singing, yeah
(Guitar)
Oh, oh, oh

First time I met you, I’ll admit I was afraid
Thought you were wonderful, but that you’d judge me
Oh, no, I was incorrect, out of the girls around you were the best
Saw straight to my heart, a beautiful dream would start
And I fell in love, you fell in love
Held hands like a photograph
You the white shades and I the black
But it was a portrait, a moment we wouldn’t take back
Everything felt natural, just a boy and a girl
Intertwining two different worlds
Baby, it’s the most magical thing being with you
Doesn’t matter where we’re from, our heritage, I’m respecting you

And yet they go on and on
Claiming interracial couples are wrong
But you love me, babe, and I love you, babe
Ethnicity will not get in our way

I don’t care what they say, you don’t care what they say
Just take my hand, my love, and I won’t let them take you away
I don’t care what they say, you don’t care what they say
Color doesn’t mean a thing when your hearts are singing, yeah
(Guitar)
Oh, oh, oh

I wouldn’t mind if you were blue
I wouldn’t mind if you were yellow
I would still think you’re just as beautiful if you were the colors of the rainbow
I wouldn’t care if you were striped
I wouldn’t care if you were checkered
It’s who you are to me that really matters
And if they say no, oh
If you truly love me I will never let go
Let them say what want ‘cause they don’t know
How much I love you so
You’re gorgeous, girl
We see through to each other’s souls
You are my world
Nothing else matters at all

And yet they go on and on
(On and on and on)
Claiming interracial couples are wrong
(They’re telling it wrong)
But you love me, babe, and I love you, babe
(I love you, I love you)
Ethnicity will not get in our way
(Nothing will get in our way)

I don’t care what they say, you don’t care what they say
(I don’t care, you don’t care)
Just take my hand, my love, and I won’t let them take you away
(I won’t let them, my angel)
I don’t care what they say, you don’t care what they say
(No, no, no)
Color doesn’t mean a thing when your hearts are singing, yeah
(Color doesn’t mean a thing, no)
Oh, oh, oh

I don’t care what they say, you don’t care what they say
Just take my hand, my love, and I won’t let them take you away
I don’t care what they say, you don’t care what they say
Color doesn’t mean a thing when your hearts are singing, yeah
Oh, oh, oh
(x2)

I don’t care what they say, you don’t care what they say
Color doesn’t mean a thing when your hearts are singing, yeah
